CHAPTER 16

AT EXACTLY TWO OF the clock in the afternoon on the day of the ball, Mrs. Francine Goulding and her daughter Lydia Goulding knocked on the door of Longbourn estate. When Mr. Hill opened the door, his eyes widened in surprise and horror. He immediately corrected his face into a bland and blank expression.

Mrs. Goulding stepped into the entry way saying, “Oh Hill! It is wonderful to see you, how is your wife? I am sure you have both missed me very much, but worry not, I shall soon be here at the helm of the household again. Are the girls in the West drawing room, no matter I shall find them.”

With that said, she sailed down the hall towards the West drawing room still speaking saying, “Oh I see Jane has inherited some of my taste at least. Things are looking very well at Longbourn. I do not know why they insist upon using the West drawing room during the sunniest part of the day. Well it is their own fault if their skin gets red and their noses peel. And just before a ball, oh my poor girls, it is a good thing I have returned, is it not Hill?”

She entered the West drawing room to find all of the ladies of Longbourn within, Jane was standing near Mary at the pianoforte. Kitty and Lizzy were sitting at the table with Kitty’s drawing supplies scattered all over it. Lizzy was assisting Kitty in cleaning her brushes. They all stood when Mrs. Goulding and her daughter entered the room. If Mrs. Goulding had taken the time to be more aware, she would have noticed, none of the ladies were smiling at her. In fact their faces held most prominent frowns upon them.

Instead she said in a loud shrilled voice, “Jane! Lizzy! Mary! And my little Kitty!! Oh how good it is to be home once again and to see my lovely daughters! Come give your mother a kiss. And you have said nothing to your sister, do you see how she has grown? Quite the gentle lady is our Lydia now. Girls, where is your father?”

The ladies glanced at each other before Jane spoke saying, “I am not sure….I understand what is going on here madam, why are you here?”

Mrs. Goulding blanched she had been expecting a much better reception than this. Why, her Jane was the sweetest, gentlest creature alive! How could she speak to her in such a way?

She recovered enough to say, “Why, we are here to see you girls and Thomas of course. Have you not missed your mother and sister?”

Jane answered, “No madam, we have not. And we wish you to leave our home….now.”

Franny put her hand to her chest and with wide eyes asked, “Whatever are you saying Jane? I thought you would be happy I am back to reunite our family.”

Lizzy walked closer to her saying, “Well that is where you would be wrong Mrs. Goulding, our family does not need to be reunited.
